herbarium collections of many scientists who worked in the South of
Russia. The herbarium consists of 21 827 sheets and is kept at the
N.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the
Ukrainian SSR. Its data were utilized for writing the book "Flora

plants are presented, those with plants collected in Ukraine
are elucidated at greater lenght. Exsiccates published in Poland,

accelerated publications of the following centuria is planned.
Zaverucha B.V. Scientific heritage of
W.G. Besser and its significance for botanical sciences (on
Bicentenary of the Birth) // Ukr. Botan. Journ. - 1984. - 41, N 5. - Ð.
98-100. Summary: The paper is devoted to the bicentenary of W.G.
Besser, a well-known botanist of the first half of the
XIX century, prominent resercher of the flora of the Right-Bank Ukraine,
delicate phytotaxonomist of vascular plants, talented introductor
of plants, organizer of the Kremenets Botanical Gardens. Brief data
on the activity of the scientist, and main sources of literature
elucidating his vital and creative way are presented. Special
attention is paid the contribution of W.G. Bessers to the
development of the botanical science, in partricular to florography
and critical and systematic study of vascular plants. New
descriptions suggested by W.G. Besser for endemics, relicts are shown to
be very significant for real profound scientific cognition of the floristic peculiarities
in the present investigations. The first attempt made by W.G. Besser
to carry out a botanical and geographical analysis of the Volyno-Podolia
flora is considered as his scientific merit.

Mel'nik S.K. Turczaninov's Herbarium collections of type specimens
of new species // Ukr. Botan. Journ. - 1979. - 36, N 1. - Ð. 85-900. Summary: All type specimens of N.S. Turczaninov's new
descriptions are separated from his autographed herbarium. They are
mounted, systematized and registered as a separate collection. The
corresponding card-index is composed and analysed according to the
taxonomic and geographic principles. The collection contains 1120
herbarium speciments, representatives of 76 families and 436 genera .
N.S. Turczaninov described the largest number of species from such
families as Myrtaceae, Compositae, Leguminosae, Sterculiaceae, etc.
The collection represents species of flora from six continents and
many ocean islands, mainly of tropical countries. The herbarium
specimens which the scientist obtained in exchange from
different botanical collections of many explorers of the Earth's flora
of the firts half of the 19th century, were originals for N.S.
Turczaninov's new descriptions.

Russia", collected by Prof. Panas Rogovych (Athanasius Rogowicz) has
been critically inventoried. The collection consists of 12260
herbarium specimens representing 1469 species. Taxonomic and
historical analyses are provided. The taxonomic nomenclature used
by A. Rogovych is linked to the modern nomenclature; a computerized
checklist of the collection is prepared. The main stages of
herbarium's formation, peculiarities of mounting methods, and the
present state of herbarium specimens are discussed; twenty four
collectors were indentified; for each person, brief biographic data
are given.
Wasser S.P., Krytzka L.I, Herbaria of Ukraine:
the present state, problems of management and development
// Ukr. Botan. Journ. - 1999. - 56, N 3. - Ð. 321-330. Summary: Thirty-nine herbaria of Ukraine are described. The
total number of herbarium specimens deposited in Ukrainian herbaria
is estimated to be more than 3.5 million units. The most important
and valuable collections are at the M. G. Kholodny Institute of
Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (National
Herbarium of Ukraine, KW; 1.7 million specimens); Uzhgorod (267
100), Lviv (250 000), Chernivtsi (150 000), Kharkiv (130 000),
Dnipropetrovsk (100 000), Kyiv (100 000) and Odessa (50 000)
universities; Nikita (139 300), Central (Kyiv, 137 000) and Donetsk
(82 000) botanical gardens; Lviv Natural History Museum (148 200),
Kherson Museum (22 000) and Institute of Ecology of the
Carpathians, Lviv (10 000), etc.
The authors stress the urgency of launching special governmental
programs aimed at support of scientific herbarium collections, and
justify the establishment of a special Herbarium Section at the
Scientific Council on Problems of Botany. It is necessary for a
better coordination of efforts and activities for preservation,
management and growth of collections. Some other urgent measures
are discussed and justified: improvement of specimen exchange
between herbaria, creation of a unified computerized system for
herbarium databases, publication of catalogues and exsiccates, etc.
The inventory of type specimens is also a task of prime
importance.
